Summary:
In 1971, I enlisted in the Navy and did my basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois. After basic training, I was assigned to a 500 bed Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia from 1971-73. There I worked with trauma amputations, service men exposed to agent orange and napalm and many other battle injuries, and diseases. Other duties included, suturing, performing minor surgeries and sometimes going home with patients to help with their recovery.
From 1973-74, I was stationed at the Keflavik Iceland Naval Base. While there, I served in the Keflavik medical dispensary and did assignments with the Marines.
My final orders from 1974-75 sent me to the Norfolk Virginia Naval Base where two large ships were waiting for me: the USS JFK (CVA67) and the USS Kalamazoo (AOR6). I was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1975 as HM3.
In 1975, I decided to use the GI Bill and attended Old Dominion University and received my post graduate degree in accounting.
In 1981, I became aware that the Army National Guard was looking for recruits with medical experience. So with my background and experience as a navy hospital corpsman, I decided to enlist, with the Army National Guard. From 1981-84, I was a Behavioral Science Specialist for them. My medical battalion was located in Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. I counseled servicemen with personal, behavioral and/or psychological issues. I also assisted in the treatment of patients with drug and alcohol related problems.
I did my best as a public servant and I feel my obligation was successful. Because of my time in the service I have many memorable experiences, one of which was being endearingly called “Doc” by members of the United States Marine Corp.
